The History of Chapelhow Legion Branch 284

Royal Canadian Legion Chapelhow Branch 284 received its charter in May 1975. Since then, it has grown into an important gathering place dedicated to remembrance, service and community.

Why the Name “Chapelhow”?

Branch 284 was named in honour of Dick and Iris Chapelhow, recognizing their lifelong dedication to veterans, Legion members and the military community.

Dick Chapelhow played an important role in the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1968, he helped establish the first executive committee of Forest Lawn Branch 275. He later served as Provincial President of the Alberta Northwest Territories Command from 1977 to 1979.

Iris Chapelhow was an active member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary and a dedicated military historian. She helped document and preserve Legion and military history so that the stories and contributions of veterans and Legion members would not be forgotten.

By naming Branch 284 after Dick and Iris Chapelhow, the Legion honoured them for their years of service, leadership and dedication to remembrance and the Legion community.

Our Branch Building and Memorial

The current Chapelhow Branch 284 building was officially dedicated on June 10, 1984. That same year, the branch erected its war memorial as a permanent place of remembrance for those who served and sacrificed.

The memorial was renovated in 2004, allowing it to continue serving as a meaningful place where members of the branch and the surrounding community can gather to remember Canada’s veterans and fallen service members.

Preserving Our History

Another important feature of the branch is its History Wall. Created as a Millennium Project, the wall documents the history of Chapelhow Branch 284 from 1975 through 2000.

Through photographs, stories and important milestones, the History Wall helps preserve the people and events that shaped the branch during its early years.

Continuing a Tradition of Service

Today, Chapelhow Legion continues its traditions of service, remembrance and community involvement.

The branch participates in Remembrance Day ceremonies and the annual Poppy Campaign while supporting veterans, active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, cadets, families and community organizations.

Chapelhow Legion is also an important social and community gathering place. Throughout the year, the branch hosts dinners, live music, dances, fundraisers, banquets, family activities and special celebrations.

Our branch is much more than a building. It is a place where people can gather, remember, celebrate, support one another and build lasting connections within the community.

You do not have to be a Legion member to visit Chapelhow Branch 284. Everyone is welcome to join us, enjoy a meal or event and become part of our community.
